According to Presidency, the recent private visits of former Presidents, Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo, to President Muhammadu Buhari, will not stop the war against corruption.
There had been widespread speculation that the private visits of the two former leaders to President Buhari were geared at protecting their interests in the anti-corruption crusade.
Obasanjo had quietly visited the presidential villa on Friday after working hours when the president had retired to the residence, while Jonathan’s visit was a total secret, which was only made public on Sunday, by Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina.
Due to the clandestine and secret nature of these visits, it is believed that the former Presidents, may have spoken to Buhari about the ongoing investigations.
Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, however, insists that the meetings were not meant to scuttle any specific investigation of alleged corrupt deals.
Shehu said regardless of the meeting, the war on corruption will persist.
“The meeting between former Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan with President Buhari were private and confidential. The president can call them for advice. But it will be unfair for anybody to feel or say it was to stop the war against corruption. The war will continue to go on.”
