5 Times Wizkid Made History in the Music Industry

Since his debut song with Banky W’s record label Empire Mates Entertainment, “Holla at Your Boy,” Wizkid has gone on to mark his name in the halls of history as one of the best Afrobeats singers to come out of Nigeria.

Having started his musical career at 11 with a band called the “Glorious Five,” Wizkid has been in the music industry for decades, never giving up on his dreams.

The Nigerian artist Wizkid celebrates his birthday today, July 16, and in honour of the Starboy, here is a list of achievements the artist has accomplished since his breakthrough in the Nigerian music entertainment industry.

  1. International recognition

Two years after releasing his smash sophomore album ‘Ayo’ in 2014, which was supported by six popular and successful singles, Wizkid featured in Drake’s single “One Dance”, which went on to become one of the most streamed songs on the streaming platform, Spotify. The song “One Dance” broke several records, such as becoming the number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and 14 other countries.

  1. First Afrobeats artist to be featured on Guinness World Record

Thanks to the success of “One Dance” featuring Drake and Kyla, and all the records it smashed worldwide, Wizkid became the first afrobeats artist to hit one billion streams on Spotify.

  1. First Afrobeats artist to hold a top 10 spot on Billboards Hot 100

Wizkid is famed for making record-breaking hits, and it was no surprise when his song “Essence” remix featuring Tems and Justin Bieber made it to number 9 on the Billboards Hot 100.

  1. First African to Debut with an album on Spotify Global Album Charts

Wizkid’s album ‘Made in Lagos’ which includes “Essence”, made its way to seat the artist as the first African to debut with an album on Spotify’s Global Album Chart with a position in the top 10. 

  1. First African and Nigerian song to be awarded Platinum Certification in the US

The mega-growth and impact of the song “Essence” was felt worldwide but mainly was loved in the USA, where it received the RIAA Platinum Certification for selling over a million copies
