Another week ends and we bring you the stories that got people talking.
IPOB drama
In response to the declaration as a “militant terrorist group”, the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) said they are not terrorists – asking how a “peaceful and armless” group agitating for secession should be regarded as a terrorist group, considering Boko Haram and the Fulani Herdsmen continue killing Nigerians.
They also questioned the proscription of the group by the Southeast governors.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama when asked how Nigeria would deal with IPOB said the government does not need foreign help, in terms of military assistance or weapons; saying the government only needs to pay more attention to the people in the area – developmental changes.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also reacted to the crisis in the Southeast caused by the reaction of IPOB to Operation Python Dance II – asking for peaceful co-existence for a better Nigeria.
To assist in averting bloodshed, the Oluwo promised to meet with IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Also, the governor of Ebonyi, Dave Umahi explained why it was necessary to ban the activities of the secessionist group and other like groups.
In another development, while people were asking where Mr Kanu was, his brother said very soon the world would know – we are yet to know the whereabouts of the IPOB leader today.
The Nigerian Police also said any member of the pro-Biafra groups caught defaulting, would be prosecuted.
The group, surprisingly, said Muslims and non-Biafrans in the Southeast have nothing to fear. which Ohanaeze reiterated, although explaining why the proscription of IPOB was necessary.
The Court this week also legalised the declaration of the group as a terrorist organisation.
President Buhari
This week, a former Senator, Clever Ikisipo said President Muhammadu Buhari has done what former President, Goodluck Jonathan could not do for Niger Delta, listing a couple of advantages that came on the heels of the Buhari administration.
Bolaji Akinyemi explained why Nigerians should believe in President Buhari, as he is the only one that can solve Nigeria’s problems.
Meanwhile, President Buhari attended the 72 United Nations General Assembly, where he spoke about countries suffering unrest.
Unhappy with Buhari’s speech at UNGA72, Femi Fani-Kayode described President Buhari’s speech as “shameless and uninspiring”.
But, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hailed the speech.
Another military exercise
While Nigerians were still in gloom over the crisis that came after the launch of Operation Python Dance II in the Southeast, the Army said it would also stretch its tentacles to the Southsouth and the Southwest – to launch Operation Crocodile Smile.
Explaining why, the Army said it was necessary to curb cult activities, unending and increasing criminal activities and the long-gone ‘badoo boys’ group in the Southwest.
Lai Mohammed and IPOB
Continuing in the discussion about IPOB, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed said “treasury looters, disgruntled elements” are the ones sponsoring IPOB to destabilise the Buhari government.
In reaction, Jonathan asked the minister to stop spreading propaganda – instead, do his job as a Minister of Information.
The Minister also accused France, the United Kingdom of sponsoring IPOB. The duo (France and the UK), have, however, reacted, saying they have nothing to do with IPOB.
The governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike asked the Minister to stop passing blame to other political parties for the incompetence of the APC government.
Bukola Saraki and the Southeast
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist group by the defence headquarters was unconstitutional, as it did not follow due process.
He also met with leaders from the Southeast.
Dino Melaye’s recall
Following court injunction that Senator Dino Melaye’s recall process should be continued by INEC, the electoral body asked the Court to grant another injunction dump the recall documents in front of his office, as the Senator was evading the body.
The body also released a revised timetable for the recall process.
Strikes end
After 36 days, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) conditionally suspended the strike, pending the determination of the FG’s resolve to meet their demands.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) expressed happiness, however, asking the FG to meet the demands of ASUU.
The non-teaching staff of Universities also suspended the strike.
CAN at it again
The Christain Association of Nigeria (CAN) has once again put President Buhari in the corner, saying he plans to Islamise Nigeria through the SUKUK bond.
Not understanding why, Islamic clerics asked CAN stop misunderstanding the policies of the Buhari-led administration.
LAUTECH’s unending crisis
Senate President Bukola Saraki said LAUTECH will resume on September 22, but ASUU said announcing resumption is trying to turn the students against them, as their demands have not been met.
