Over the weekend, Burna Boy got to perform at the prestigious and historic Apollo Theater in New York City, a sold out show that will herald his entry into his upcoming Coachella set. The mood was atmospheric and energetic, Burna running through a medley of his songs from the opener Heaven’s Gate, a 2018 collaboration with Lily Allen, to 2013’s street banger Yawa Dey.
Michael Jackson, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix and Sarkodie are aristes who have had sold 0ut shows in the Theater, a venue carved out for African-American performers. In an era where artistes selling out shows, especially in international venues, adds more to their capital and status, Burna can brag about the fact he’s the first Nigerian artiste to do so.
