Freak accident? Teenager gets home to find his mother’s dead body in the freezer

A Texas teenager made a chilling discovery Thursday.

Shannon Huddleston, 38, of Mineral Wells, TX., was found dead Thursday evening in a freezer by her 19-year-old son. Initially investigated as a homicide due to the bizarre nature of the discovery, officials are now ruling it an accident.

There are no signs of trauma or a struggle and officials are awaiting a toxicology report to rule a final cause of death.

Mrs Huddleston was last seen Thursday morning shortly after waking up, according to NBC DFW. Her son made the mortifying discovery when he went to the garage to fish a TV dinner out of the chest freezer around 6:30pm.

‘The son reported that he had come home and at some point went to get something to eat, or retrieve something out of the freezer, at which time he made the startling discovery of his mother’s body inside of that freezer,’ Mineral Wells Police Chief Dean Sullivan told WFAA.

The freezer, which has a door on top that lifts open, was unlocked and still contained frozen food, Mr Sullivan added.

Officials arriving after the son’s distraught 911 call interviewed both the teen and searched the home, according to CBS DFW. Husband Cecil Huddleston was arrested earlier in the day on a parole violation, Fox 4 reported.

Mortifying: Mrs Huddleston’s 19-year-old son discovered her frozen body when looking for dinner

Despite prior drug, misdemeanor assault and deadly conduct violations, the ex-con’s arrest has nothing to do with his wife’s death, he has an alibi and has never been considered a suspect in the unusual death, according to reports.

A former boss of Mrs Huddleston’s was shocked by her death.

‘This actually sent chills up me last night, very sad news, just sad to hear it,’ Mike Parker, owner of Jimmy’s Café, told Fox 4, adding ‘she was always upbeat, always in a good mood.’

‘Shannon didn’t meet a stranger,” Mr Parker told CBS DFW. “I mean she always had a smile working and cared about people.’

The deceased woman worked at Jimmy’s Café as a waitress, but had recently begun working at a manufacturing plant, according to reports.

It is not clear how long her body was in the freezer, but officials believe she may have died of asphyxiation, rather than freezing to death.

‘One of the dangers in this situation, is not so much the freezer, it’s the suffocation factor,’ Mr Sullivan told Fox 4.

This isn’t the first chest freezer death Mr Sullivan has seen, he told NBC DFW, adding that investigators have come across a few instances of people becoming trapped after falling into the units.

One neighbor spoke fondly of the family.

‘They have been good neighbors,’ Kenneth Haynes told WFAA.

Another expressed sadness over her sudden death.

‘My heart melts, because, to me, it was all about [her son], because that was his mom,’ Adriana Valley told NBC DFW.
