Nigerian man on trial in Dubai for stealing memory card

A 22-year-old Nigerian man has been arragned before a Dubai Criminal Court for breaking into a mobile phone shop and stealing more than Dh127,567 (N5,688,977) worth of memory cards.

The unemployed man appeared before the court on Tuesday, 23 September, where he confessed to stealing 8,312 memory cards.

On 1 September, 2013, the owner of the mobile shop, a 51-year-old Iranian, called police after discovering that the main door was broken.

The owner of the shop said, “It was 9am. I checked the items inside and found that 8,312 memory cards of different capacities, worth Dh127,567 (N5,688,977) were stolen. I checked the cameras I had in the shop and saw an African man carrying out the robbery at exactly 4.53am.”

During the course of investigation, police discovered that the defendant had already been detained in relation to a separate robbery. He was questioned and confessed to stealing the cards with the help of another man, who remains at large.

A verdict for the case is expected to be given on 28 October.
