Nollywood has a great selection of movies coming out this July to keep viewers rooted to the front of their tv screens. Exploring all genres from comedy, to actions to romance and even thrillers. These are some of the movies and series you should look out for this July:
- Out In The Darkness (July 4)
Out in the darkness depicts the story of a struggling young mother, who battles Postpartum depression after the birth of her child. Suffering from emotional distress and a series of hallucinations, it becomes increasingly difficult for her husband and mother to understand her.
Directed by Sarah Kwaji in her debut directory role, and a star studded cast of Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon and Bimbola Akintola. The movie first premiered at NollywoodWeek in Paris and will be released in cinemas in Nigeria.
- Midnight In Shangisha (July 4)
Midnight in Shangisha details a series of events that unfolded over the course of a night in Shangisha. The movie was directed by Pen Pusher Pro and Sosofisa, the cast features Sola Sobowale, Baaj Adebule, Lanre Adediwura, Tina Mba and Martha Ehinome Orihere. It is in cinemas in Nigeria.
- Lost Days (July 11)
Another directorial debut in the Industry, this movie was directed by Wingonia Ikpi, and it is a part of the first features project slate by Native Filmworks and MichelAngelo productions.
Set to be released on Prime Video, lost days follows the life of Chisom who returns to her hometown of Abeokuta after surviving lymphoma, with the hopes of a reconciliation with her family, but when she disappears soon after it forces her family to confront emotions they had kept buried and to also answer unearthed questions.
- Zikoko Life (July 12)
Zikoko life is a three-part anthology film series that explores autonomy and love using three stories: ‘What’s Left Of Us’, which depicts the life of a married woman who is on a journey of reclaiming her body autonomy. It is directed by Victor Daniel and Olamide Adio and stars Tolu Asanu and Caleb Richards.
The second story, ‘My Body’ tells of a married couple navigating a faith filled life while exploring sexual intimacy. It was written, directed by and stars Uzoamaka Power.
The last story, ‘Something Sweet’ details the life of a woman in her 40s who finds love with a younger man, it stars Michelle Dede and was written by Dika Ofama.
The anthology series will be released for streaming on Zikoko’s YouTube and the cast includes Ifeoma Fafunwa, Bimbo Manuel, Baaj Adebule, Durotimi Okutagidi and Cynthia Clarke.
- Dear Future Me
The series was created by Precious Okpala and starring Austine Onuoha, Johnson Ibeh, Oluwafemi Adekanye, Ejirooghene Asagba and Patience Ene Ujah.
‘Dear Future Me’ touches on the lives of people who write letters to their future selves, touching on their regrets, hopes and the crushing weight of decisions they made. It premiers on African Magic Showcase.
- Bendel Girl (July 18)
Popularly known as the Director Big Brother Nigeria, Gbenga Kayode has ventured into the movie industry and makes his debut with Bendel Girl.
It follows the obsession of a man with a mysterious girl in his past, his obsession has the power to either ruin or heal the people he holds there. It was co-produced by Bukola Oloyede and stars Tolu Tinde, Saskay Jonah, Tolani Baj, Tope Tedela, Timi Agbaje, Jibola Dabo and Amanda Iriekpen.
- Ewo (Forbidden) (July 18)
Ewo tells the tale of the struggle of having to choose between following the path of tradition or personal choices. Produced by Riverside Productions, the cast includes Bimbo Ademoye, Ademola Adedoyin, Moyo Lawal, Tina Mba, Dele Odule, Akin Lewis, Jaiye Kuti, Saidi Balogun.
- To Kill A Monkey (July 18)
This Netflix crime thriller series created, written and show run by Kemi Adetiba follows the life of Efemini, a man who is at the brink of poverty and reconnects with an old friend who introduces him to the world of cybercrime.
Efemini begins to struggle with who he is as he starts to lose sense of his morality. It is an eight part series and stars William Benson, Bucci Franklin, Ireti Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, Chidi Mokeme, Stella Damascus, Michael Ejoor, Ireti Doyle, Teniola Aladese and Lillian Afegbai.
- Ireke: Rise Of The Maroons (July 25)
A movie set in the British colonial slavery era, in the Caribbean and follows the life of Prince Atanda who was betrayed and sold into slavery in Jamaica where he meets Adunni who he eventually falls in love with. He joins the maroons and alongside other slaves fights for freedom.
Directed by Emmy Nominated journalist Gbolahun Peter Macjob, the cast includes Tobi Bakre, Kolawole Ajeyemi, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, Bolanle Ninalowo and Faithia Balogun. It is coming to cinemas.
- Marked (July 31)
This six episode series delves into the desperate world of babalwa, an ex-cop mother who will do anything to save her daughter’s life.
The cast includes Lerato Mvelase and it was created by Akin Omotoso who also serves as the show runner. The series will be available to stream on Netflix.
