Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and erstwhile Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida were nowhere to be found at President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration to contest the 2015 presidential election in Abuja on Tuesday, 11 November.
Both former leaders are prominent members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, but in the past couple of years, Obasanjo has publicly fallen out with President Jonathan, most notably with his famous ‘open letter.
Obasanjo, who was a former chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, would resign his position, citing the way the ruling party was being run, as the factor which led to his decision.
Babangida, on the other hand, has become somewhat indifferent to party affairs, since 2011, when he lost the party’s ticket to Jonathan. However, his recent return from a medical trip in Germany may be responsible for his absence at the Eagles Square.
It is also believed within certain quarters that Obasanjo is against the second term ambition of the Jonathan, because he supposedly had an agreement with the party’s leaders and governors in 2011, that he would only stay in office for one term.
