The Presidency has maintained its stance that the legal battles faced by the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, didn’t originate from the Executive.
Speaking to The Punch, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stated that the legal woes faced by Saraki wasn’t caused by the Presidency.
Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu are currently facing legal prosecution for alleged forging the Senate Standing Rules 2015.
Saraki is also facing prosecution for false declaration of assets at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.
Asked if the case against Saraki would be withdrawn if he stepped down as President of the Senate, Adesina said, “Senator Saraki’s legal battle was not originated by the Presidency in the first place, so this issue does not arise.”
On the prosecution witness list for the trial are two presidential advisers: Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang; and the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu.
Charged alongside Saraki are the immediate past Clerk to the National Assembly, Salisu Abubakar Maikasuwa, and the Deputy Clerk to the National Assembly, Benedict Efeture.
