President Donald Trump met with the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at the White House, Tuesday. Trump expressed support for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in eastern Ukraine in the meeting, which was billed as a “drop-by”, but made no reference to Russia’s role.
The meeting with President Poroshenko was the same day the Treasury Department added two Russian officials to its growing list of those to face sanctions over Russia’s activities in Ukraine, Reuters reports. Trump said he and Poroshenko had very, very good discussions” and a “lot of progress has been made”.

The sanctions target Ukrainian and Russian officials and companies that the United States has accused of aiding Russia take a strong hold of the Crimean peninsula, a part of Ukraine annexed by Russia in an illegal move in 2014.
Poroshenko called Trump, “one of the most reliable supporters” and “strategic partners” for Ukraine.
In a separate White House statement issued after Pence met with Poroshenko, it said Pence discussed that the United States supports implementing the Minsk agreement, which is aimed at putting an end to Russian support for the rebels in eastern Ukraine.
