The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo on Thursday has given other political parties a seven-day ultimatum to stop using President Goodluck Jonathan’s photograph on their campaign posters and bill boards.
The Chairman, PDP Elders Committee in Imo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, gave the ultimatum at the end of the party’s leaders meeting in Owerri.
He described it as indiscriminate use of the picture of President Jonathan on posters and billboards by candidates of other political parties stating that it was fraudulent to put the president’s photograph in a poster alongside a candidate who is not a member of PDP.
He said that the ultimatum was for the affected political parties and their candidates to remove all posters bearing the image of Jonathan.
Iwuanyanwu advised political parties to feature only their candidates on posters and not to join them with another party’s candidate.
He, however, said the PDP welcomed the decision of other political parties to adopt Jonathan as their presidential candidate but noted that it was wrong to put the president’s picture in their posters.
“It is clumsy and a political mix-up for a candidate vying for the governorship, House of Assembly, Senate or House of Representatives seat on the platform of another party to put the photograph of PDP presidential candidate in his or her poster. Those that have no presidential candidate should come out and let the world know that their party is unable to field a presidential candidate,’’ he said.
Iwuanyanwu called on the party chairman in the state to take disciplinary action against those involved in anti-party activities. “I am not happy with the attitude of some of our party members. If you believe in a party you must also believe in the party’s decision,” he said.
