Something is happening to the PDP and we need to give the once prodigal son that frittered the nation’s reserve a second look this time around.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was at the helm of affairs from 1999-2015 when it lost to the new entrant – the APC; registered two years to the General election.
The party was like a fresh breath as Nigerians were given an opportunity to choose between the two parties, though both emerged with somewhat unqualified candidates, the electorates decided on the candidate of APC, Muhammadu Buhari.
The loss was massive and shocking, a death knell to the party that once boasted of running the country for sixty years. Immediately, the unity that was once envied in the party was thrown to the dogs as everyone scrambled for remnants.
The Governors made their attempt to take control of the party’s machinery, same as the Board of Trustees. While this was going on, an interim National executive committee was constituted headed by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the chairman. He was mandated to organize the Party’s National convention.
The National convention opened the floodgates of the Judicial battle for the party which lasted for years until the dust settled on it via a Supreme Court judgement on July 12, 2017. The apex court affirmed Senator Ahmed Markarfi as the national chairman of the Party.
The judgment brought a new lease of life to the party depsite the defeats they had suffered in Edo, Ondo and other by-elections, except the exclusive success in Osun West which was made possible by the harmonization of the two factions.
Not less than few weeks after the judgement, the PDP has maintained that they will woo back the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to their fold as he belongs to the Party.
On Tuesday, while speaking at a conference, Atiku accused the APC of bullying. It takes the intelligent and the wise to know that the sudden peace in PDP is about to work in Atiku’s favour and if this pulls through, will the PDP be the Change to Change the APC ?
