Vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday that North Korea is not capable of striking the United States with “any degree of accuracy” and that North’s missiles have the range, but lack the necessary guidance capability, Reuters reports.
North Korea conducted its first intercontinental ballistic missile test (ICBM) earlier this month and said that it had mastered the technique of mounting a nuclear warhead on the missile.
According to Reuters, Selva told the Senate Armed Services Committee, that the July 4th test stopped short of showing North Korea had “the capacity to strike the United States with any degree of accuracy or reasonable confidence of success.”
He also added, “What the experts tell me is that the North Koreans have yet to demonstrate the capacity to do the guidance and control that would be required”.
On Monday, South Korea also extended an olive branch to North Korea, the first gesture made by President Moon Jae-In to Kim Jong Un to discuss ways to avoid hostile acts near the shared border.
When asked about preemptive military operations against North Korea, General Selva responded “we have to entertain that potential option.”
“We need to think seriously about what the consequences of that action might be,” Selva said.
