The plight of some Rivers State indigenes studying outside the country as beneficiary of the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) scholarship scheme is still begging for attention, the state government under the direction of Govenor Nyesom Wike has failed to yield to their cries rather, the state government have placed the students in the same category with members of opposition party in the state.
This was a recap of what Governor Wike said while addressing these hapless students after his Chatham house speech in November 2017. The students had got wind of Governor Wike’s presence at the Chatham house and they laid an ambush to once again call his attention to their plight, an enraged Wike addressed the students saying “You think if you do this you will win anybody over? I have passed this stage. By the time you do this, you won’t get what you want.”
That statement as crude as it was, was caught on video, as the official on-record statement of an Executive Governor who swore to an oath to Protect the right of all Rivers State indigenes.
The Rivers State Government under the leadership of Governor Wike at the earliest stage has made decisions to discontinue some legacy projects of his Predecessor and one of it was the scholarship scheme.
The state premised its decision on the paucity of funds however subsequent happenings has shown that the state government is not truthful with his claim of paucity of funds.
Yesterday December 4, 2017, the Rivers State Government donated sixteen land cruiser SUV’s to National Assembly members from the state to “aid their work”. With the current market price of land cruisers hovering between 23 and 25 million, the state has coughed out almost four hundred million naira to please the ego of sixteen individuals that already has more than enough at their disposal.
For a state that stopped scholarship because of inadequate funds to spend 400 Million Naira to purchase cars for sixteen individuals. It has clearly shown how untruthful the government was in stopping the scholarship scheme.
While Governor Wike is distributing this largess to the National Assembly members, he should remember that the future of more than 100 Rivers State indigenes studying in various universities across the globe are on line and struggling for survival. Wike should save their future to preserve the future of Rivers State.
