Has INEC approved ex-militant commanders to monitor elections?

by Kolapo Olapoju

It’s quite understandable that former militant commanders will want to embrace ‘election monitoring’.

The era of getting paid for being a militant is long gone… or maybe not.

In any case, former militant commanders in the Niger Delta have set up election monitoring groups ahead of the forth coming general polls.

The group, which is called: “Leadership, Peace and Cultural Development Initiative”, has vowed to monitor the elections nationwide.

While it is uncertain that INEC has approved the group to monitor elections, their mouthpiece, Pastor Reuben Wilson had the following to say:

“We have a governor boasting that his party will lead civil disobedience if President Jonathan defeats his party in the March 28 presidential election. They are planning to rig. They are planning to use cloned PVCs with the assistance of some Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, officials.”

“We have also heard some people saying that we, the Niger Delta freedom fighters, are no more supporting our brother, Jonathan, ahead of the March 28 election. Let them continue to dream. But we wish to inform them that we are aware of their rigging plots and that is why we have decided to form ourselves into monitoring groups to frustrate their agenda.”
